Why get an Epidural Injection?

This treatment is referred for patients experiencing persistent pain related to spinal nerve inflammation, disc irritation, or facet joint irritation when conservative treatments (e.g., physiotherapy, other medications) have not provided sufficient relief.

How does an Epidural Injection work?

At United Radiology Clinics Melbourne, our clinicsuse low-dose CT imaging. A Specialist radiologist precisely guides a fine needle into the (epidural) space around the spinal nerves. Once in position, a mixture of cortisone (anti-inflammatory medication) and local anaesthetic is injected. The imaging ensures accurate placement to maximise effectiveness and safety.

How long does an Epidural Injection take?

Our clinics in Melton, Lalor, Essendon and Millpark, Victoria conduct the appointment generally takes around 15–30 minutes. This includes preparation, imaging, administration of the injection and a brief observation period afterwards.

Are the Epidural Injections bulk-billed?

Bulk billing is available for all eligible patients with a valid Medicare card and referral.

Out of pocket costs will apply for non- medicare card holders. Please contact your nearest United Radiology clinic for fees and more information.

Post Injection Care

After the injection, you may experience mild discomfort at the injection site and temporary numbness from the anaesthetic. Most patients are observed for a brief period and can walk freely afterward. You should not drive on the day of the procedure and are usually able to return to normal activities the following day. Rest and gradual increase in activity are recommended, and any unusual symptoms should be discussed with your clinician.
