Core Biopsy & Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)

At United Radiology Melbourne, we provide image-guided core biopsy and fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures that can assist in getting accurate tissue biopsies and may assist with symptom relief. Using ultrasound or CT guidance, our radiologists target the region of concern to obtain a tissue sample in a minimally invasive way. These procedures are commonly used to assess lumps, masses, or other tissue changes identified on imaging or clinical examination.

How long does the procedure take?

Ultrasound-guided core biopsy and fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures are typically completed within approximately 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the number of samples required. More complex biopsies (such as bone or spine) may take longer.

You should also allow additional time at the clinic for preparation and a short recovery period, which usually involves observation for 15–30 minutes after the procedure.
