Obstetric ultrasounds assess foetal growth and development during pregnancy, while gynaecological ultrasounds are used to assist and investigate symptoms such as pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, fibroids or ovarian cysts. All scans are performed by qualified sonographers and reviewed by a radiologist, with results sent directly to your referring doctor.
How long does an ultrasound take?
An obstetric or gynaecology ultrasound at United Radiology typically takes around 20–45 minutes, depending on the type of scan and the area being examined. Your sonographer will advise you of the expected duration when booking your appointment, and you can usually resume normal activities immediately after your scan.

There is generally no specific aftercare required following an obstetric or gynaecology ultrasound. You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after your scan unless your referring doctor has provided other instructions. Your results will be reviewed by a radiologist and forwarded to your referring practitioner, who will discuss the findings with you.
Are Obstetric Ultrasounds Bulk-Billed?
With a valid referral, there is an out of pocket gap fee for Obstetric (singleton and twin) ultrasounds. We recommend contacting your nearest United Radiology Melbourne clinic to confirm billing fees.
Are Gynaecology Ultrasounds bulk-billed?
Yes, Bulk billing is available for all eligible patients with a valid Medicare card and referral. Out of pocket costs will apply for non- medicare card holders. Please contact your nearest United Radiology clinic for fees.
