OPG

An Orthopantomogram (OPG) scan is a specialised dental X-ray that provides a panoramic image of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures in a single scan.

Unlike small dental X-rays that show only a few teeth at a time, an OPG captures a wide view of the entire mouth, including the upper and lower jaws, tooth roots, jaw joints, and sinuses. OPG scans are commonly used by dentists, orthodontists, and oral surgeons to assess dental development, diagnose jaw conditions, and plan treatments such as orthodontics, wisdom tooth removal, or dental implants.

The scan is quick, painless, and uses a very low dose of radiation, making it a safe and efficient way to evaluate oral and jaw health.

What is an OPG scan?

An OPG scan is a panoramic dental X-ray that shows a broad view of your mouth and jaw structures.

It can display:

• All upper and lower teeth

• Jawbones

• Wisdom teeth

• Temporomandibular joints (TMJ)

• Sinuses and surrounding bone structures

Doctors use this scan to detect dental problems, assess jaw alignment, identify infections or cysts, and plan dental treatments.

How long does an OPG scan take?

An OPG scan is very quick.

• Scan time: approximately 10–20 seconds

• Total appointment time: usually 5–10 minutes

During the scan, the imaging machine rotates around your head to capture a panoramic image of your teeth and jaw.

What should I expect during the scan?

The procedure is simple and painless.

During your appointment:

1. You will be asked to stand or sit in front of the OPG machine.

2. The radiographer will position your chin on a small rest and ask you to bite gently on a sterile mouthpiece.

3. You may be asked to remove jewellery or metal objects around your head and neck.

4. The machine will rotate slowly around your head while the image is taken.

5. You will need to remain still for a few seconds while the scan is completed.

The scan itself takes only a few seconds and you can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

Is an OPG scan safe?

Yes. OPG scans use low-dose X-ray radiation, making them safe for most patients when medically indicated.

If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please inform the radiographer before the scan so appropriate precautions can be taken.

When will my doctor receive the results?

After your scan:

• The images are reviewed by a radiologist

• A report is sent to your referring doctor or dentist

• Your doctor will discuss the results and any next steps with you
