Why get Sacroiliac Join Injection?

A sacroiliac joint injection may be referred to manage pain coming from the sacroiliac joint, located at the base of the spine. It is commonly used for patients experiencing persistent lower back, hip, or pelvic pain. The procedure may help manage pain and confirm whether the sacroiliac joint is the source of patient pain.

How does a Sacroiliac Join Injection work?

This procedure involves injecting a combination of local anaesthetic and corticosteroid medication directly into the sacroiliac joint using CT guidance. The anaesthetic provides short-term pain relief, while the corticosteroid works to reduce inflammation within the joint, which can assist in symptom relief.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

  • Targets the specific source of pain and can assist in symptom relief

  • May help reduce inflammation and joint stiffness

  • May provide short to long-term pain relief

  • Minimally invasive and well tolerated

  • Can assist in diagnosing the cause of lower back or pelvic pain

How long does the procedure take?

The injection itself is usually quick and typically takes around 15 minutes, with a short observation period afterwards before you can go home.

Are Sacroiliac Join Injections bulk-billed?

Bulk billing is available for all eligible patients with a valid Medicare card and referral.

Out of pocket costs will apply for non- medicare card holders. Please contact your nearest United Radiology clinic for fees.
